🏛️ Shrine System Overview

Shrines are the core exploration and progression system in Breath of the Wild. There are a total of 120 main game shrines, plus 16 additional shrines from the “The Champions’ Ballad” DLC, bringing the total to 136. Clearing each shrine awards a Spirit Orb. Collecting 4 Spirit Orbs allows you to exchange them at a Goddess Statue for either a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel.

🧩 Four Types of Shrines

1. Puzzle Shrines

The most common type. Upon entering, you find yourself in an isolated puzzle room that must be solved using Rune abilities like Magnesis, Cryonis, Stasis, or Bombs. Puzzle difficulty ranges from beginner to mind-bending, and they usually contain 1-2 treasure chests.

2. Combat Trial Shrines

These contain an arena where you must defeat Guardians. They are divided into three difficulty tiers:

NameGuardian ConfigurationDifficultyRecommended Preparation
Minor Test of StrengthSmall Guardian★★☆☆☆Any weapon + Bow
Moderate Test of StrengthSmall Guardian + Flying Type★★★☆☆Shock/Ice Arrows, Shield Parry
Major Test of StrengthLarge Guardian (with weapon variations)★★★★☆Master Sword, Ancient Arrows, Elemental Weapons

Combat Trials are a shortcut to obtaining powerful weapons early on: the treasure chests often drop Knight’s Series, Royal Series, or even Guardian Series weapons.

3. Blessing Shrines

Upon entering, there is no puzzle; you simply collect the treasure chest. Most of these appear after completing a Shrine Quest in the overworld, such as the “Trial of the Island” or “Trial of the Night.”

4. Shrines Unlocked by Shrine Quests

There are a total of 42 Shrine Quests in the game. Completing the corresponding quest reveals the hidden shrine. This is the part where collection progress is most likely to stall.

⚔️ Classic Shrine Quest Walkthroughs

Stranded on Eventide (Eventide Island)

The most famous challenge in the game: upon landing on the island, all your equipment is stripped away. You must defeat three monster camps on the island without dying and place three Orbs into their respective pedestals.

  • Do not bring any equipment before landing; it will be confiscated anyway;
  • Prioritize using environmental props on the island: metal boxes, iron spheres, explosive barrels;
  • The Hinox (one-eyed giant) that appears at night can be robbed of the Orb around its neck while it sleeps;
  • For the monster camp on the central plateau, it’s recommended to use bombs and the terrain to defeat them one by one;
  • After completing all tasks, the Korgu Chideh shrine appears.

Trial of the Night (Tarry Town Ruins)

The interior of the ruins is completely dark. You must proceed while holding a torch or using a glowing weapon. The core of the challenge is to find the hidden Orb and bring it to the shrine pedestal while avoiding Guardians along the way. It is recommended to bring plenty of torches and use Stasis to immobilize Guardians.

Under a Red Moon

You need to stand on the designated pedestal on Hyrule Ridge during a Blood Moon and naked (without any equipment). Blood Moons occur approximately every 2 hours and 48 minutes (real time). It is recommended to build a nearby campfire and repeatedly “sit” to pass the time.

The Three Lomei Labyrinths

Akkala, Gerudo, and Hebra each have a Lomei Labyrinth. The correct route is to first climb to the top of the labyrinth to activate the terminal, then take the underground passage directly to the shrine, which is much faster than wandering through the maze. The Tu Ka’loh shrine rewards the Barbarian Helm, one of the strongest attack-boosting pieces of equipment in the early game.

💡 Efficient Collection Strategies

  1. Prioritize Unlocking Towers: Each tower unlocked allows you to use the telescope to mark shrine light beams across a large area.
  2. Utilize the Shrine Sensor: After upgrading the Sheikah Slate, you can set the sensor to target shrines, which will alert you when you are nearby.
  3. Stamina vs. Heart Allocation: It is recommended to first use Spirit Orbs to increase your stamina to about 2 full wheels, then start adding hearts; stamina-boosting food can temporarily compensate.
  4. Prioritize Combat Trials: Strength Test shrines reliably produce high-quality weapons; the earlier you complete them, the higher the return.
  5. Watch for “Blessing Shrines”: They have no puzzles but often require completing the corresponding Shrine Quest. Collect them as soon as you see them.
  6. Collect DLC Shrines Last: The 16 shrines from “The Champions’ Ballad” require freeing the four Divine Beasts first to unlock.
