Horses are Hyrule’s most reliable travel companions. This guide covers horse catching, training, stable systems, and rare mount acquisition methods in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

🐴 Horse Stats Explained

Each horse has three stats, rated from 1 to 5 stars:

Stat	Function	Description
Strength	Determines the horse’s health points	Unrelated to charge damage; 5 stars can reach 300 HP
Speed	Determines the horse’s top speed	The most important stat for long-distance travel
Stamina	Determines the number of sprint boosts (taming)	More sprints mean higher long-distance efficiency

There is also a hidden stat called “Temperament”: either Gentle or Wild. Gentle horses are easier to tame; Wild horses require calming down first.

🕵️ How to Catch a Horse

Find wild horses on plains or grasslands, crouch and approach slowly from behind;
Once close, press the mount button to grab on, then repeatedly press the soothe button (default L) until the horse calms down;
Taming consumes stamina; if your stamina runs out, you’ll be thrown off;
Ride to any stable to register and name the horse; registration costs 20 rupees per horse;
Return to the stable after some time to retrieve it.

Increasing Bond: Soothe, feed, and ride the horse frequently. At max bond, the horse becomes more obedient and will automatically avoid obstacles.

In Upland Lindor and Taobab Grassland, you can find wild horses with these top-tier stats:

::: tip Horse Farming Tip Save at the spawn point and reload repeatedly to quickly find solid-colored horses with ideal stats; spotted and pink/light brown horses usually have inferior stats. :::

🐴 Horse God Malanya

Malanya is the deity who protects horses and can revive deceased horses.

🏠 Stable System

Stables offer horse registration, lodging, cooking pots, merchants (Beedle), and various side quests. There are 15 main stables across the map.

Tears of the Kingdom: Pony Points

Tears of the Kingdom introduces the “Pony Points” membership system. Earn points by visiting stables, registering horses, staying overnight, and completing stable-related tasks.

::: tip Quick Point Farming Repeatedly staying at stables (1 point per stay) is the most stable way to farm points. After unlocking the 50% discount, the cost becomes even lower. :::

Uses of the Towing Harness

In Tears of the Kingdom, equipping a horse with a harness allows you to attach carts, cargo, or even Zonai devices to tow behind the horse. It’s a great helper for stable quests and transporting items.

🐎 Riding Tips

Sprint Rhythm: Don’t use all your sprint charges at once; save one for emergencies;
Auto-Pathing: With high bond, the horse will follow roads automatically—you only need to make minor direction adjustments;
Mounted Combat: Charging on horseback can knock enemies away; spears have a huge attack range from horseback;
Healing Your Horse: Stabling and retrieving your horse will fully restore its health;
Horses Can’t Enter Deep Deserts/Volcanoes: You can’t ride horses in the Gerudo Desert—switch to a sand seal instead.
